My DCC isn't working? What do I do?

CONTENTS

Step 1: mIRC settings
Step 2: Router Configuration
Step 3: Software Firewall Configuration

The solution is pretty painless. We'll assume you're using mIRC as an IRC client.

Step 1: mIRC settings

First, go to the File menu and then Select Server...

Then go to Options

Then go to Advanced

Making sure that DCC only is checked, enter a number under First: and another under Last:.

I suggest not a large range of numbers; something like like 4000-4010, 4050-4060 etc will do, but remember what numbers you use because you will need to remember them later. Make sure that Use random ports and Bind sockets to IP address are not checked.

Click OK as many times as it takes to get out of the menu.

You're now done the first step - look how painless that was.

Step 2: Router Configuration

The next step should be only if you have a router. If you're not sure, check the following questions, and if the answer to one of them is 'yes' than yes, you have a router.

  1. Do you have more than one computer in the house?
  2. Do you access the Internet wirelessly?
  3. Do you have a combination modem/router? (some countries have these)

Next, you'll want to go to firewalling.com's router page. Go ahead and click the link, it'll open in a new window.

Go find your router's make & model. It should be Dcom/Linksys/etc with several numbers after it. Find it in the webpage you've just clicked and click the link.

Follow the directions in the page to forward your ports. If you don't know what your internal IP address is (it is NOT the IP address everyone sees, ie 123.45.6.7; it usually starts with 192.168), go to Start, Run, type cmd (then press enter), then in the window you've just opened, type ipconfig /all.

It should look like this:

I'm sure you can find the correct IP address quite easily, you'll need that when you are forwarding the ports as the web site tells you.

Step 3: Software Firewall Configuration

If you have a software firewall, like McAfee, Outpost, etc, you'll need this step. If not, you're finished.

I don't have instructions for every firewall software, but the correct firewall rule to enter is:

TCP Incoming firstport lastport Allow
(where firstport is the first number and lastport is the second)

If you need help or further clarification, don't be afraid to talk to me or e-mail me, being sure to state the problem and I'll do our best to help, though I can't guarantee I know how to use every firewall software there is.
